Once the lens is through smaller opening, you may
gather the slack in the cord and secure it with the toggle, sealing
out light that would enter from in front of the camera.
How loose or tight to make the collar is up to the photographer, as some camera
controls such as manual focus and zoom rings are often close to the camera. Since
the camera body itself acts much like a flange, blocking most of the light that
would pass in around the edges of the opening, it doesn't absolutely need to
be really tight.
Most people find it easier to operate the camera with the
lens collar with a bit of space between the cloth and camera body to permit easy
access to controls.
When
working
in
foul
weather,
it is best to
move the neck out as far as possible on the lens so that the water-resistant
fabric can protect
it
from
moisture.
